Jury Service Overview
The Superior Court of California, County of San Bernardino, hears thousands of cases each year and depends on jurors from across the county to make this work possible. Below is what you can expect during the process — from summons through verdict.
1. Summons
You receive an official summons notice in the mail. Respond online through this portal within the time period printed on your summons.
2. Reporting
If your service is required, report to the courthouse listed on your summons at the date and time provided. Always check the portal the day before for status updates.
3. Security Screening
All visitors pass through security screening. Allow extra time, leave prohibited items at home, and have a valid photo ID ready.
4. Jury Pool
You will be assigned to a jury assembly room and may be called to a courtroom as a member of a prospective panel.
5. Voir Dire
Attorneys and the judge ask questions to determine whether you can serve impartially on a specific case. You may be selected, excused, or returned to the pool.
6. Trial
Selected jurors hear evidence, witness testimony, and arguments. Pay attention; do not research the case or discuss it outside the courtroom.
7. Deliberation
After closing arguments, jurors meet privately to discuss the evidence and reach a decision based solely on what was presented in court.
8. Verdict & Release
Once the jury reaches a verdict, it is read in open court. You are then thanked for your service and released.
